Zuni Icosahedron presents Danny Yung’s experimental xiqu: Startup of Wusheng. By experimenting with two Wusheng opera excerpts, Drowning and Tilting the War Carts, the programme explores the metaphysical theme of death. Through the tales of Qu Yuan, who throws himself into the river in outrage, and Gao Chong, who sacrifices himself, we can savour the mix of emotions in the common destination of their stories. The programme innovates traditional Chinese opera to resonate with a contemporary and international audience and explore ever-evolving traditions from various viewpoints and social structures. |
