100 Hong Kong and Shenzhen Secondary School Students Experience the “Chinese Cultural Celebrity Rescue” Learning Journey

The year 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Under the lead of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau (CSTB) of the Hong Kong SAR Government, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and the Culture, Media, Television, Tourism and Sports Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality jointly promote a red educational study tour under the theme of historical event “Chinese Cultural Celebrity Rescue”. The initiative is supported by China Tourism Group, which synchronously rolls out an in-depth local tourism product of the same theme, offering a tourism perspective to deepen the understanding of Hong Kong’s history and culture of the War of Resistance among visitors and the local public.

HKTB and the Culture, Media, Television, Tourism and Sports Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality co-hosted the “Chinese Cultural Celebrity Rescue” Hong Kong–Shenzhen study tour today (9 October), and a starting ceremony took place in Hong Kong with 100 participating secondary school students from Hong Kong and Shenzhen. The students visited the Hong Kong Museum of the War of Resistance and Coastal Defence, Memorial Monument for Sai Kung Martyrs during World War II in Tsam Chuk Wan, Chinese Cultural Celebrity Rescue Memorial Hall in Shenzhen and other locations to broaden their knowledge in national development and Hong Kong’s history in the War through study tour experience.

Dr Peter Lam, HKTB Chairman, said, “HKTB has consistently implemented the concept of ‘Tourism is Everywhere in Hong Kong’, leveraging the city’s diverse tourism resources to drive the development of thematic tourism itineraries in partnership with travel trade partners. Commemorating the historical milestone of 80th Anniversary of the Victory in the War of Resistance, HKTB is launching the red tourism routes and points of interests for study tours developed and consolidated over recent years under nine major themes, with a view to enriching visitors’ experiences. We would like to thank the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government for its guidance and Culture, Media, Television, Tourism and Sports Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality for its strong support. We would also like to thank our partner, China Tourism Group, for actively launching locally distinctive red tourism products. We believe these offerings can effectively combine historical and cultural sites and educational attractions with tourism resources to encourage participation from both the local public and visitors.”

Ms Liu Lei, Director General, Culture, Media, Television, Tourism and Sports Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality, said, “The glorious history of ‘Chinese Cultural Celebrity Rescue’ not only is a shared national memory of Shenzhen and Hong Kong, but also offers resources for a valuable thematic tourism treasure jointly developed by the two cities. It is a history of heartwarming humanity in times of turmoil, telling the profound story of the unshaken friendship between Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Nowadays, Shenzhen–Hong Kong tourism partnership in pursuing high-quality development has come to its prime time. We are committed to develop this red educational study tour into a lesson with inspiring experiences, a history book with human touch, a bridge of partnership and vibrancy, inspiring young people in Hong Kong and Chinese Mainland to review the past and build a brighter future together.”

Mrs Angelina Cheung, Commissioner for Tourism of the Hong Kong SAR Government, said, “To deepen public and visitor understanding of the history of Hong Kong’s War of Resistance, the Chief Executive announced in the 2025 Policy Address the promotion of a new red heritage study tour route themed around the ‘Chinese Cultural Celebrities Rescue’. Through this educational red tourism route, we hope to enable the public and visitors to experience the weight and warmth of history firsthand during on-site visits, to appreciate the heroic deeds of patriotic figures who sacrificed their lives for justice, and thereby gain a deeper understanding of the history of Hong Kong’s War of Resistance. The Tourism Commission will continue to support the development of red tourism study tours and collaborate with various sectors to develop more projects that integrate historical and cultural elements with tourism experiences.” She also thanked the Education Bureau for inviting and organising schools offering Tourism and Hospitality subjects to participate in the event so that participating students can make full use of this rare learning opportunity to experience firsthand the precious tourism resources related to the history and culture of the War of Resistance in Hong Kong and Shenzhen.

100 students from Hong Kong and Shenzhen took learning beyond classrooms

After the ceremony, 100 students from Hong Kong and Shenzhen went onto the one-day study tour. They first stopped at the Hong Kong Museum of the War of Resistance and Coastal Defence, listening to a docent’s explanation on Hong Kong’s role in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and relevant historical details. The students then visited the Memorial Monument for Sai Kung Martyrs during World War II in Tsam Chuk Wan, included in the third batch of the National List of War of Resistance Memorial Facilities and Sites, to learn about the exploits of the Hong Kong and Kowloon Independent Brigade guerrilla fighters in resisting Japanese aggression during the War of Resistance.

The tour group then visited the Chinese Cultural Celebrity Rescue Memorial Hall in Shenzhen to reconnect with the stories of “the greatest rescue” during the War and studied the historical materials and artifacts. The students also visited a thematic collection of the “Chinese Cultural Celebrity Rescue” in the Shenzhen Library before the closing ceremony, consolidating their study tour and exchanging their learnings.

HKTB’s continuous efforts in promoting red study tours

Starting from last year, HKTB has actively promoted study tour tourism, categorising landmarks and attractions with potential for study tours across the city into nine thematic study focuses, including red tourism as one of the key topics. HKTB organised a dedicated seminar in May to introduce to more than 200 local and Chinese Mainland travel agents Hong Kong’s red tourism resources, points of interest, experience and other tourism assets, to help the trade plan itineraries and curate tourism products.
