HKTB Announces Visitor Arrivals for First Half of 2022

Post Date: 28 Jul 2022
Details:

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) today (28 July) announced visitor arrival numbers for the first half of 2022. Visitor numbers rose from a monthly average of around 4,000 between January and April to nearly 19,000 in May and over 41,000 in June since the Government lifted bans on non-residents entering Hong Kong in May. Among the visitor source markets, the upturn of arrivals from the Mainland was relatively more significant than the others. Total arrivals for the first half of the year were 76,000, showing a year-on-year increase of 125%. However, compared to pre-pandemic figures in 2019, which recorded 35 million visitors in the first half of the year, number of visitors recovered in the first half of 2022 is still below 1% of the same period.

Nearly 70% of visitors to Hong Kong in June arrived from overseas and stopped overnight before travelling on to cities in the Mainland, in contrast to the early months of the year when visitors came mostly for family visits or business trips. Visitors favour Hong Kong for stopovers mainly because of its convenient transport connections to the Mainland, ease of communication, affordable air fares, and the city’s attractive shopping options.
