Top International Cyclists Return in October for “Sun Hung Kai Properties Hong Kong Cyclothon” Enrolment for Rides on Three-Tunnel, Three-Bridge Route Starts Next Wednesday with Free Skill Test

Calling for cyclists and formidable cycling teams from all around the world for a ride of a lifetime! Organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), “Sun Hung Kai Properties Hong Kong Cyclothon” (Hong Kong Cyclothon) will see the return of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) 1.1 Road Race to the city’s urban landscape after five years on 22 October (Sunday) this year. Besides, the popular 50km and 30km rides will cover major parts of the three-tunnel, three-bridge routes, which otherwise are rarely open to cyclists. Enrollment for the event starts next Wednesday (6 September), with a free cycling technique assessment in mid-September to invite first-time participants to sign up for event. The HKTB will leverage the return of the international cycling mega event to actively promote and consolidate Hong Kong’s status as Asia’s event capital in visitor source markets to attract more cyclists to come to Hong Kong for our city’s energetic, vibrant and diverse travel experiences.”

 

Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) Executive Director Adam Kwok said he is pleased that SHKP once again becomes the title and charity sponsor of the Hong Kong Cyclothon this year. The UCI Class 1.1 Road Race will return this year, allowing citizens and cycling enthusiasts to watch top international riders compete. In addition, riders from other cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) are invited to participate, which will enhance interconnectivity and friendship among young people in the GBA.”

International cyclists worldwide dash through world-class trafficway-turned-racecourse

 

This year’s Hong Kong Cyclothon brings you the opportunity to see professional cyclists dart across the bustling city centre in front of you up-close! After a five-year hiatus, the UCI 1.1 Road Race returns to Victoria Harbour with the highlights below:

  • Nearly 100 professional cyclists from all over the world, more than 10 UCI WorldTour teams, Pro and Continental teams, such as Jayco-AlUla from Australia and Corratec - Selle Italia from Italy. The city’s homegrown team will also compete for the champion's jersey and prize money.
  • The racewill be held along Salisbury Road, Mody Lane, Mody Road, Science Museum Road and Hung Hom Bypass in Tsim Sha Tsui, with a 4.3-kilometre-long lap. Cyclists will compete in a criterium race of over 100 kilometres of technically challenging, winding and slopy roads, which tests the athletes for their speeds and energy in a standard that exceeds that of traditional road races. Members of the public and visitors can experience the excitement of speeding bicycles close-up. Don’t miss this heart-throbbing event!

 

In addition, the event will invite cyclists from Greater Bay Area to participate in the Men's and Women's Open Races. Cyclists will speed along the skyscrapers and along Victoria Harbour in Tsim Sha Tsui East to experience the thrill of the metropolis, while promoting Hong Kong's status as the international tourism event hub of the Greater Bay Area.

 

Enrolment starts next week with free cycling technique assessment – seize the chance to challenge the three-tunnel, three-bridge route!

 

Besides the exciting races, the SHKP Hong Kong Cyclothon continues to offer riding experiences of various levels. Among the events, the popular 50km and 30km rides, which cover major routes and landmarks in Hong Kong, will be open for enrolment next Wednesday (6 September) to a maximum of 5,200 cyclists with a free cycling technique assessment in mid-September. Participants are required to pay for the enrolment only after their eligibility for the event is confirmed. Sign up for the event and seize the chance to dash through the city’s landmark and enjoy the unique urban charm of Hong Kong in an unusual perspective!

 

50km ride:

  • The route spans six districts and passes through landmarks such as the Tsim Sha Tsui Cultural Centre and International Commerce Centre (ICC), as well as three tunnels and three bridges, namely the Tsing Ma Bridge, Ting Kau Bridge, Stonecutters Bridge, Cheung Tsing Tunnel, Nam Wan Tunnel and Eagle's Nest Tunnel.
  • The tunnels and bridges, including the world-renowned Tsing Ma suspension bridge carrying both road and rail traffic, are open to cyclists only during the Hong Kong Cyclothon. Cyclists can experience the unique sensation and scenic harbourview as they travel along the route!

 

30km ride:

  • Get on Stonecutters Bridge and pass through the ICC to take in the skyscraper-filled cityscape and the natural beauty of the city.

 

Interested cyclists can sign up starting from 10am next Wednesday (6 September) on the enrolment website (http://register.hongkongcyclothon.com). All first-time participants/ participants of Hong Kong Cyclothon in 2017 or before must take the skill test organised by the HKTB. Some of the key dates are as below:

  • Cycling technique assessment results will be emailed to participants
  • Eligible athletes who have passed the assessment shall confirm their enrolment by completing the fee payment according to the instructions in the email

 

 

Waitlist

If quota is available, the organiser will notify eligible registrants on the waitlist by email to confirm the enrolment.

 

Family-friendly cycling experiences by the Harbour

This year's Cyclothon will also feature a “Family Fun Ride” for the public. A 1km-long route will be set aside along Salisbury Road for 200 participants to enjoy cycling on the road. Children aged six and above accompanied by their parents can experience the fun of cycling in the city together. Interested families can sign up on the event website from next Wednesday (6 September).

 

Ride for Charity

In line with SHKP’s spirit of “riding for charity”, participants are encouraged to make a charitable donation of HK$100 to HK$500 when enrolling to make the event more meaningful. Likewise, the entire enrollment fee for CEO Charity & Celebrity Ride and Family Fun Ride will be donated to charity together with an extra donation from the SHKP to help the people in need through the Community Chest.

 

Traffic arrangement

In view of the event, road closures will be implemented in various districts in phases starting from 1:00 am, 22 October. The HKTB will inform the public on road closures and diversions arrangements in advance to allow time for affected parties to make plans for their travel on that day.
