| Details: | Get ready to experience the action-filled cycling gala! The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) will stage the “SHKP Hong Kong Cyclothon” this Sunday (22 October). Starting from 5:20 am, Hong Kong's downtown will be filled with exciting cycling events and races. Olympic medalist Sarah Lee and Ceci Lee, who pocketed 2 silver and 1 bronze medal recently in the 2022 Asian Games Hangzhou, will take part in the 50km and 30km rides respectively, dashing through downtown Hong Kong and taking their games to the road together with fellow riders. Another highlight of the Hong Kong Cyclothon this year is the return of the UCI 1.1 Road Race, in which 15 cycling teams from Australia, Italy, Malaysia, Thailand, Mainland China and Hong Kong competing for championship in downtown Tsim Sha Tsui.
Cycling lovers dashing through three tunnels and three bridges
The Sunday cycling gala will start with the 50km and 30km rides. Cyclists will ride on a number of major traffic routes. The 50km route covers three tunnels and three bridges, including Tsing Ma Bridge, Ting Kau Bridge, Stonecutters Bridge, Cheung Ching Tunnel, Nam Wan Tunnel and Eagle's Nest Tunnel. On the other hand, participants of the 30km ride will get on the Stonecutters Bridge to enjoy the unique Hong Kong view.
Over 100 international and local cyclists competing for championship downtown
The UCI 1.1 Road Race will be held in Tsim Sha Tsui after five years hiatus. 14 teams of UCI WorldTour, Pro and Continental cycling teams from Australia, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, Guam, Indonesia, Mongolia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and the Mainland will gather in Tsim Sha Tsui, with close to 100 professional riders competing over 100 kilometres on a unique circuit with narrow curves and slopes. The Hong Kong Cycling Team, fresh from their Asian Games triumph, will also be competing as the home team. The race is far faster and more energy intensive than a traditional road race, making it a spectacular and exciting event not to be missed!
In partnership with the Sports Bureau of Guangdong Province and the Guangdong Cycling Association, the Hong Kong Cyclothon this year organised the “2023 City Cycling Challenge around Greater Bay Area (Hong Kong) – Men’s Open and Women’s Open” , which brought together top cycling experts from the Greater Bay Area to compete in a criterium. The series race will be held in Guangzhou, Dongguan, Huizhou, Jiangmen, Hong Kong and Shaoguan. The HKTB expects the event to promote exchanges between cities in the Greater Bay Area, explore the possibility of staging larger-scale sports events in the future while promoting multi-destination travel, thereby reinforcing Hong Kong's role as a centre for international tourism events in the Greater Bay Area.
Witness the sports mega event together The annual cycling event welcomes both the local public and visitors to come and watch the worldclass cycling road race close-up and feel the thrill of speeding bikes. Cheer on the riders to show your support! Visitors can join the crowd at the spectator stand on Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, opposite Wing On Plaza, to experience the thrill of the heart-throbbing events. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served 3 basis. Alternatively, audience can watch the UCI1.1 Road Race live on RTHK TV32, HKTB’s YouTube channel and Facebook page.
Family Fun Along the Harbour & Riding for Charity This year, the Cyclothon also organised the fun-sharing “Family Fun Ride” to encourage families to get together and share the joy of cycling. CEO Charity and Celebrity Ride has invited 28 celebrities from government officials, Legislative Council members and the business leaders to participate in the event. The full entry fee was set aside for charitable purposes, and together with additional donations from SHKP, the event will encourage participants to ride for a good cause of helping the needy through donating to the Community Chest of Hong Kong.
Special traffic arrangements From 1 am on the event day (22 October), traffic diversion and road closure will be implemented in phases to facilitate the staging of the event. The upper deck of Tsing Ma Bridge (Kowloon-bound) will reopen at 7:15 am; other major roads will gradually be reopened from 9 am. Temporary traffic signs at the closed road junctions will be erected, and Variable Message Signs on roads of road closure will be on display to provide adequate instructions to road users, and relevant information will be disseminated through various channels to allow the public to make travel plans in advance. |
