Original Crew of Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In Recreates Iconic Scenes to be Displayed at Hong Kong International Airport from Today

Dive into the world of movies and discover Hong Kong from a new perspective! Riding on the global success of the critically acclaimed local movie Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, which is celebrated for its captivating action choreography and exquisite set design and production, Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDA) under the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) along with the film makers are jointly presenting the “Live out the Cinematic Charm of Hong Kong” Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In Exhibition. The Exhibition will be held in two phases respectively: first in Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) and then in the shopping mall AIRSIDE in Kowloon City. With captivating scenes from the movie, the Exhibition promises both locals and visitors an exhilarating journey through Hong Kong’s rich history and culture in a truly immersive experience, encouraging viewers to follow the footsteps from the movie for a unique adventure in town.

 

Starting today (7 October), visitors arriving in the Arrival Hall of the HKIA will be transported back in time. They will be greeted by an iconic 6.5-metre-high double-story set and a massive “Kowloon Walled City” neon sign. Visitors can trace the footsteps of the characters in the meticulously restored film set, including the barber shop, tea stall, store and winding alleys. They will relive exciting scenes from Twilights of the Warriors: Walled In and get a taste of the unique culture and history of this fascinating place. In December, the Exhibition will be recreated in the shopping mall AIRSIDE in Kowloon City, the epicentre of the film’s story, bringing locals and visitors a further immersive experience for a journey to Kowloon Walled City in the good old days.

 

Officiating at the opening ceremony of the Exhibition were Mr John Lee, The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr Michael Wong, Deputy Financial Secretary, Mr Raistlin Lau, Acting Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Dr Pang Yiu-kai, Chairman of the HKTB, Mr Fred Lam, Chairman of the AAHK and The Honourable Dr Peter Lam, Chairman of Media Asia Group.

 

Mr John Lee, the Chief Executive of the HKSAR, said, "Hong Kong movies have long been highly appreciated internationally; they are an important aspect of Hong Kong's soft power and a significant tourism asset that helps tell the good stories of Hong Kong. This is the result of the efforts of several generations of filmmakers. The government will work closely with various sectors to promote Hong Kong cinema and enhance the city's cultural strength. We will continue developing movie-inspired tourism projects through different Hong Kong films to attract more visitors to Hong Kong while promoting our local film culture."

This time, themed around Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, the Exhibition offers more than an immersive visit to the sets, sparking interest among both locals and visitors to explore Hong Kong’s rich cultural and historical heritage beyond the movies and enjoy their time in the wider city.”

About “Live out the Cinematic Charm of Hong Kong” Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In Exhibition

 

The Exhibition will take place in two phases: at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) and the AIRSIDE shopping mall in Kowloon City. The first phase runs until 20 November 2024 in Arrival Hall A at HKIA, allowing visitors to explore the film's iconic sets upon arrival. The exhibition includes a twostory lifesize replica of the Walled City attic and other famous sets, recreating key moments from the film. Equally unmissable is the “Kowloon Walled City” neon sign on the roof, which adds cinematic flair to the display  

Six must-visit exhibition zones

Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In revives the now-demolished Kowloon Walled City and brings back the life of its residents in the 1980s, presenting the collective memories of a generation of Hongkongers on the silver screen. It follows a troubled youth, Chan Lok-kwun (starring Raymond Lam), as he accidentally enters the Walled City, where he becomes close friends with gangsters. Under the leadership of Tornado (starring Louis Koo), they vow to protect the safe haven of Kowloon Walled City. The film is a worldwide hit and has been shortlisted for the Cannes Film Festival and represented Hong Kong in the Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards. Tornado’s barber shop is one of the major sets and instantly offers viewers a time travel experience back to the 1980s with its mosaic floor tiles, antique red barber chairs and timehonoured barber tools. The tea stall is a key social spot, where residents of the Walled City gather in the movie. Look for the replica of Cantonese rotisserie food and the cha siu rice on the table, a token of friendship between the movie characters.

The store, where Chan buys a chocolate candy mask for disguise, is also a key checkpoint in the Exhibition. Other timeless snacks and toys, as well as a plastic flower workshop, are also included to recreate the Hong Kong ambience in the 1980s. Scenes from the daily life of the residents of the Walled City, such as the well and secondhand home appliances store, are also presented to reproduce the city’s former streetscape.

The winding alley where exciting scenes take place in the movie comes to life thanks to the crafty creation of the film crew, presenting all the details for an authentic experience for visitors. As Chan finds home and friends in a hidden attic in the Walled City, the story of the warriors unfurls in humble settings familiar to Hong Kong people. Details such as the ceiling fan, mahjong table and beer crates reflect the meticulousness of the crew. Also look for the electronic poster for a modern rendition of the heritage.

There will be a large display board in the Exhibition to provide viewers with more information about the history of Kowloon Walled City, synopses of Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, and the Exhibition. Inspiring Movie Tourism with Exhibition Phase 2

 

Since Kowloon City is where the story of Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In takes place, the second phase of the Exhibition will bring the set “home” to the AIRSIDE shopping mall in Kai Tak to further reconnect the experience with its origins. In phase 2, the Exhibition will create an immersive indoor experience unlike any other, allowing visitors to stroll through different parts of the Walled City and become part of the scenes to further experience the magic of movie tourism in town.
