WHAT'S HAPPENING IN HONG KONG
Tradition is the Heart of Hong Kong
Hong Kong is full of artisans that keep cherished old traditions and culture alive. In this newsletter, we’d like to take you on a journey of exploration into some of Hong Kong’s most beloved customs by introducing you to several master craftsmen.

The Craftsmen Keeping Tradition Alive
The Mahjong Tile Carver
The game of mahjong is deeply rooted in Chinese tradition, often played at family gatherings and during festivals like Chinese New Year. While most mahjong tiles on the market are now machine-etched, Uncle King, who inherited the shop from his father, still hand-carves the tiles and continues to hone his craft every day.
The Bamboo Steamer Craftsmen
Bamboo steamers are a familiar fixture in Cantonese cuisine. Master Lui Ming, who is more than 90 years old, began handmaking bamboo steamers when he was 32 years old. He still spends his days making custom orders in his Tuen Mun factory, channelling his lifelong passion for his craft into dreaming up new inventions and perfecting his old ones.
The Qipao Tailor
Qipao is an iconic figure hugging dress made with embroidered fabric. Master Yan patiently handmakes qipaos and Chinese cotton jackets, and has been doing so for over 65 years. All of Master Yan’s work at his Jordan neighborhood shop is custom made-to-measure.
Dim Sum Craftsmanship
Dim Sum is an essential part of Cantonese cuisine, traditionally enjoyed in restaurants for breakfast and lunch. There is an art to the creation of every piece. Watch these chefs as they carefully craft mouth-watering dim sum.
