Art Basel, 21 - 25 March
Arts Basel’s largest show in Hong Kong since 2019, this year’s edition features 170+ of the world’s leading galleries from 30+ countries territories. It returns with all the special sectors: Encounters (the fair’s sector dedicated to large-scale works), Film, Kabinett (featuring thematic and focused presentations) and Conversations. The signature artwork, ‘Hand Me Your Trust’, is a new and site-specific moving image work by Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist, which will take over the M+ Façade (commissioned by M+ and supported by Art Basel). Learn more >
Art Central, 21 - 25 March
The 2023 edition of Art Central features 70 diverse and ambitious galleries from around the world. Hong Kong curator Chris Wan is invited as Curatorial Advisor to oversee a programme of immersive installation art. In addition, in partnership with Asia Society Hong Kong Centre, there is a series of engagement programmes for the public including talks, performances and media arts.  Learn more >
M+ Special Exhibitions (various end dates)
In celebration of M+’s first anniversary, it is holding a few special exhibitions, including the largest retrospective of Yayoi Kusama in Asia outside Japan. The exhibition features more than 200 works of various art forms across six themes: Infinity, Accumulation, Radical Connectivity, Biocosmic, Death, and Force of Life and also showcases three new works of Kusama, including: Pumpkin (2022), Death of Nerves (2022) and Dots Obsession.
Hong Kong Museum of Art (Now till June 14)
Eternal Enlightenment: the Virtual World of Jiajing Emperor - In collaboration the prestigious Hong Kong collector Mr Anthony Cheung - owner of Huaihaitang collection, HKMoA has organised an exhibition with the theme of Jiajing Emperor from Ming dynasty, featuring approximately 240 ceramics, lacquerwares, portrait paintings and cloisonné that demonstrate the idealized immortal world of Jiajing Emperor 500 years ago. In response to the exhibition, Hong Kong artist Hui Hoi-kiu, Angel has curated a party with over 500 underglaze blue porcelain items occupying a 14-metre dining table. LOCAL UPDATE
Canada removes COVID-19 testing requirement for arrivals from Hong Kong
With effect from March 17, air travellers to Canada on flights originating from the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong or Macao will no longer be required to provide evidence of a COVID-19 test result before boarding. This means there will no longer be any federal COVID-19 border measures in place, which is welcome news for Canadians wishing to travel to Hong Kong.
