With the theme “Everywhere A Wish”, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) invites locals and visitors to explore and experience the city’s diverse and vibrant Chinese New Year celebrations, wishing for fortune, luck, success and prosperity for the new year. Kicking off the series of festive celebrations was the leading event, the HKTB “Cathay International Chinese New Year Night Parade”, which successfully concluded in Tsim Sha Tsui tonight (the first day of the Year of Horse) under the theme “Best Fortune. World Party”. The launch ceremony for the Cathay International Chinese New Year Night Parade was officiated by Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive Mr John Lee (centre), his wife Mrs Janet Lam (second from right), Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Miss Rosanna Law (rightmost), Cathay Group Chief Executive Officer Mr Ronald Lam (leftmost), and HKTB Chairman Dr Peter Lam (second from left).
This year’s parade, themed “Best Fortune. World Party”, featured about 60 floats and performing groups from around the world, coming together to present a spectacular global party to welcome the Year of the Horse.
Holiday makers sprang to life as 12 dazzling floats appeared to spread blessings
This year’s parade featured 12 floats from 11 participating units. Long-term partners included Cathay, which served as the title-sponsor for the 24th consecutive year, and The Hong Kong Jockey Club, which took on an especially meaningful role in the Year of the Horse as the Parade Route Sponsor. New to the parade this year were McDonald’s Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Brand Toy Association and Lam Tsuen Wishing Square. Other participating organisations, including Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, Ocean Park Hong Kong, The Asia Tourism Exchange Center, the Macao Government Tourism Office, the Quality Tourism Services Association and HKTB showcased the festive spirit of the Year of the Horse and Hong Kong’s appeal as a premier events destination.
Ceaseless cheers for exciting performances by local and international performers
This year, 16 performing teams from various countries and regions participated in the parade, including the Chinese Mainland, Italy, France, Spain, the US, Canada, Australia, Turkey, the Philippines, India and Egypt. Thirteen of the teams performed in Hong Kong for the first time, forming a stellar line-up. The 30 local performing teams were equally exciting, featuring multiple champion-quality groups to engage the crowd and share festive blessings.
Before the parade, 15 local performing groups took turns to perform from about 6pm, with lion and dragon dances, fancy rope skipping, street dance and magic, to warm up the crowd.
Chinese New Year is one of Hong Kong’s most important festivals. Through large-scale celebratory events and festive decorations, HKTB aims to enhance the holiday ambience and offer both locals and visitors a richer festive experience. On the night of the Parade, in addition to enjoying the spectacular floats and performances, locals and visitors can also enjoy the festive decorations around Tsim Sha Tsui, especially along the parade route, including red lanterns, Chinese New Year lighting and enhanced illumination effects. From now until the Lantern Festival (3 March), HKTB displays red lanterns and festive lighting at various locations across Tsim Sha Tsui in partnership with the trade. The decorations will be lit from 6 to 11pm daily, adding to the festive atmosphere of the Chinese New Year celebrations.
Extending the Parade Excitement: Floats on Display at Kai Tak for the First Time starting on the Second Day of CNY
From the second day of Chinese New Year (18 February) to the 16th day (4 March), the floats will appear at various locations across the city to continue the excitement of the parade. For the first time, eight distinctive floats will be displayed at Kai Tak Sports Park. On the second and third days of Chinese New Year (18 and 19 February), Chinese Mainland and international performing teams who participated in the parade will perform live on two temporary stages at the venue, bringing the festive atmosphere to the audience.
The remaining four floats will be displayed at Ocean Park, Lam Tsuen in Tai Po, Sha Tin Racecourse and Victoria Park in Causeway Bay. Performing teams will also visit shopping malls and attractions across the city.
