2400 Stem Cell Research and Experts in Regenerative Medicine Gathers in Hong Kong to Explore Top-Notch Development in Medical Science

The standard of medical research in Hong Kong is well recognised internationally. The Hong Kong Tourisms Board (HKTB) successfully brings the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) 2025 Annual Meeting to Hong Kong for the first time, the world’s largest international convention in stem cell research and regenerative medicine, in partnership with Hong Kong Convention Ambassadors from three local universities – The University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Opening today (11 June), the four-day Annual Meeting in Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre gathers more than 2400 top-tier researchers and experts in stem cell research and regenerative medicine from 58 countries and regions, from Asia, North Americas, Europe, Australia, the Middle East, the Mainland and Hong Kong. Pioneers share the latest advances in the field, with topics spanning the field of regenerative medicine including topics such as advances in cell therapies, fundamental discoveries, understanding disease processes and more.

Dr Peter Lam, HKTB Chairman, said, “The International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) is a globally leading organisation in medical sciences and research, and its annual meeting is one of the world’s most significant international academic conventions in medical science. Hong Kong is the first city chosen to host this annual event in Asia after a 13-year hiatus, underscoring the city’s status as the ‘World’s Meeting Place’. I am grateful for the active participation of the Hong Kong Convention Ambassadors from the three local universities, who leveraged their  influence and network during the bidding for the host of the event to make the event come true. We are also delighted to see that more professionals from a wider range of expertise are joining HKTB’s league of Convention Ambassadors, and we believe their participation can help identify and contribute to the staging of more significant international events in Hong Kong.”

Valentina Greco, ISSCR President, remarked, “Hosting ISSCR 2025 in Hong Kong marks a defining moment for global stem cell science. As a vibrant research hub at the crossroads of Asia and the world, Hong Kong offers an ideal setting to connect diverse scientific communities, spark new collaborations, and accelerate innovation. The ISSCR is deeply grateful to the city of Hong Kong and to our generous co-sponsors – the University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology – for their support and commitment to bringing The Global Stem Cell Event to this beautiful city. With the unwavering support of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, these three leading universities, and inspired leadership from our 2025 Annual Meeting Program Committee, this meeting exemplifies the power of partnership and shared vision. We are proud to return to Asia for the first time in more than a decade at a time when our collective progress in stem cell research and regenerative medicine and to advancing therapies that have life altering impact on patients depends on the exchange of bold ideas across borders.”

The four-day ISSCR Annual Meeting comes with a rich agenda with plenary sessions, award lectures, concurrent track sessions, innovation showcase, networking opportunities and many more activities. HKTB provided the organiser with all-round support, such as site recces, securing venue, lining up potential sponsors and more.

The success of staging the ISSCR 2025 Annual Meeting in Hong Kong is contributed to the efforts and support of the Hong Kong Convention Ambassadors. The “Hong Kong Convention Ambassadors” programme is one of HKTB’s key strategies in promoting the city’s MICE tourism development. Since its establishment in 2020, representatives from the eight local universities, chambers of commerce, professional organisations, public bodies, various industrial entities and professional societies have become Ambassadors. Leveraging their networks and influence in their sectors, the Ambassadors lead and facilitate the staging of large-scale conventions in Hong Kong, with events ranging from medical science, innovation and technology to financial services, aviation and logistics. The Convention Ambassadors also work with HKTB to promote Hong Kong as a hub for international MICE events.

The newest term of 2025/26 Hong Kong Convention Ambassadors have recruited about 180 local and Mainland leaders, breaking the record with 30% more than that of the last term. The Ambassadors came from various sectors including business, medical sciences, professional services, technology. 72 members are new to the scheme, allowing the Ambassadors to reach a wider audience.

So far, HKTB has facilitated 76 international conventions to be held in Hong Kong between 2025 and 2027, with an estimated attendance of over 180,000 MICE visitor arrivals. Among these conventions,  27 events are contributed to the Convention Ambassadors’ efforts. These include events in innovative technology, aviation, medical sciences and more, and some are first-time events in Hong Kong, such as the IEEE Electron Devices Technology and Manufacturing Conference held in March this year, Routes World 2025 to be held in September, and World Cancer Congress 2026.

HKTB will continue to work closely with the Hong Kong Convention Ambassadors to bring in world-class large-scale conventions to Hong Kong, with a view to attracting more high-yield overnight MICE visitors.
