On New Year’s Eve, 31 December 2024, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) will host the largest New Year Countdown Celebration in Hong Kong with fireworks extravaganza. Themed “The Symphony of Happiness”, the show will feature four stunning effects over iconic Victoria Harbour to ring in 2025 with both locals and visitors to the city.

Mr Dane Cheng, HKTB Executive Director, said, “The fireworks display celebrating the New Year is one of the city’s key tourism events and has attracted numerous locals and visitors for viewing over the years. We hope that this marriage of Hong Kong’s world-famous skyline with innovative pyrotechnics will provide both locals and visitors with an unprecedented visual feast for the senses and an unforgettable New Year’s Eve experience of a lifetime.”

Nature-Inspired Fireworks Convey Wishes for a Beautiful Life

The fireworks choreography was designed by Mr Liu Lin, Chief of the Fireworks Project and Director of Fireworks Operations for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Inspired by the nature, the New Year Countdown Fireworks Display will offer blessings for the New Year by revealing the myriad states and stages of the five natural elements – metal, wood, water, fire and earth.

The 12-minute long New Year countdown fireworks display will consist of five sections, spanning 1,300 metres, from Central to North Point on Hong Kong Island, and four stunning fireworks effects: “Blooming Blossoms”, “Evergreen Tree”, “Golden Waterfall”, and for the first time in Hong Kong, “Propitious Clouds”.

1) Fire: Fire Dance

The much-anticipated New Year countdown fireworks display will kick off with bright red fireworks, symbolising a fiery passion for life and dreams.

2) Earth: Beautiful Home

“Blooming Blossoms” uses advanced pyrotechnic technology that sets off five layers of fireworks at different heights, creating a visual effect of flowers blooming one after another. The stunning effect is complemented by upbeat music, expressing visions of our beautiful home.

3) Wood: Life and Growth

Small saplings brave the elements to grow into a 220mtall “Evergreen Tree”, made up of six layers of green and gold fireworks – a testament to the spirit of strong perseverance, hard work and quiet cultivation.

4) Water: Water is Life

The 60-second “Golden Waterfall” is formed with layers of golden fireworks that seemingly cascade down the magical night sky. The majestic waterfalls are embellished with colourful fireworks to inspire viewers to create infinite possibilities by embracing the power and versatility of water.

5) Metal: Light of the Future

Appearing for the first time in Hong Kong, “Propitious Clouds” presents rainbowcoloured smoke against silver fireworks. Illuminated by the silver fireworks, the smokey effect presents images of auspicious clouds in various colours.

To ensure sophisticated and three-dimensional effects, five barges and 16 pontoons will be arranged in two rows on Victoria Harbour to launch fireworks at different heights and in different angles. The accompanying music for the New Year countdown fireworks display was arranged by the renowned music producer Chiu Tsang-hei, skilfully blending various musical genres and styles.
