Attractions & Sightseeing
Wong Tai Sin is home to the famous temple that bears its name, usually
jam-packed with devotees praying for good fortune. Hau Wong Temple
and Nan Lian Garden are each worth a visit. Kowloon Walled City District
is where the Song dynasty’s last emperor escaped when he was fleeing
invading Mongols, while Kowloon Walled City Park used to be a lawless
enclave before being redeveloped in 1994.
Though fully transformed into a modern new town, Yuen Long still
harbours incredible vestiges of Hong Kong’s past, with many heritage
sites well preserved. A number of centuries-old ancestral halls provide
a rich vein of information about the early clan settlers in the area. These
heritage sites offer a wonderful way to step back in time and revisit an
earlier age.
With the rapid development of Fanling, the fields are pretty much
gone, and the new town is now filled with residential and commercial
blocks. Culture and heritage buffs will be delighted with the
abundance of treasures to see, including a stunning Taoist temple
and a number of walled villages. It’s also fun to walk around in the
nearby shopping mall and check out the local eateries and shops for
a real slice of modern-day Hong Kong life.
