This is the world’s first-ever museum exhibition devoted to Song Huai-Kuei, a legendary figure in Chinese art, film, music and fashion from the 1980s to the 2000s. The exhibition sheds light on Madame Song’s multiple identities and professional pursuits. It features more than 320 objects, including rare archival materials, clothing by prominent designers, movie costumes and footage, artworks, and large-scale tapestries. The exhibition chronicles Song’s life and work from the 1950s to the early 2000s and reveals her previously underestimated influence on transforming China through the Reform and Opening-up in the 1980s into the cosmopolitan we know today.
The exhibition features 108 pieces of artifacts from the collections of the Guangdong Museum, the Hong Kong Museum of Art (HKMoA) and the Macao Museum, including China trade paintings, fine export silk, clothing, accessories and home fabrics, to showcase the Greater Bay Area’s landscape and silk production during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
To coincide with the exhibition, Hong Kong artist Janko Lam has created ""Those Days - Out There"", a studio that invites visitors to travel through the past, present and future.
*The programme is part of the third Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Culture and Arts Festival.
"M+ Sigg Collection: Another Story" takes a visual approach to examine the styles and practices of contemporary Chinese art from the 1990s to the present. The exhibition surveys how artists reconsider their cultural identities and express their uncertain state of being during China’s rapid modernisation in the 1990s. It brings together a multitude of works that exhibit qualities of overflowing visuals, ambiguous meanings, obsessions with transiency, and traditional interpretation. It offers a different perspective on understanding contemporary Chinese art and foregrounds its unique visual language through the lens of artists who strive for self-presence.
