Hong Kong Island

Bank of China Tower –

At 315 metres high with two

masts reaching 367.4 metres, the tower is one of the

most imposing buildings on Hong Kong Island. The

70-storey structure, designed by Chinese-American

architect I. M. Pei, was officially opened in 1990.

Garden Road, Central

Central Plaza –

Located in north Wan Chai, the

78-storey (374 metres, about 1,127 feet) Central Plaza

is one of Asia’s tallest buildings. Rooftop neon lights

change colour each quarter hour after 6pm to signal the

time of day.

Harbour Road, Wan Chai

Exchange Square –

The three towers of Exchange

Square were designed by the Swiss architect Remo

Riva and now house the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong.

The curtain wall was the first in Hong Kong to use fully

unitised two-sided structural glazing.

Connaught Place, Central

Happy Valley Racecourse –

Home to the “sport of

kings” since 1846, this course can seat over 53,880

spectators for what is the most popular sport in Hong

Kong. Visitors who wish to experience the excitement

can join a horse racing tour (see Tours, page

C-35

).

Wong Nai Chung Road, Happy Valley

Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC)

One of Hong Kong’s most important venues for

shows, concerts, exhibitions, meetings and conventions.

Outside the HKCEC, the Expo Promenade is home

to the Forever Blooming Bauhinia sculpture and the

Reunification monument, as well as the daily flag-raising

ceremony.

Expo Drive, Wan Chai

HSBC Main Building –

Completed in 1985, this modern

glass and steel building at the end of Statue Square was

designed by the famous architect Lord Foster. It houses

the largest and most powerful financial institution in

Hong Kong and one of the biggest banks in the world

today.

Queen’s Road Central, Central

International Finance Centre (ifc) –

Located near the

Victoria Harbour waterfront, the ifc is a prominent office-

shopping-leisure complex designed by internationally

renowned architect Cesar Pelli and built above a major

transport interchange. The centrepiece is Two ifc, one

of the tallest skyscrapers in Hong Kong at 88 storeys,

opened in 2003. The ifc mall offers 74,300 square

metres (about 800,000 square feet) of retail space,

including a luxurious cinema. A 399-room Four Seasons

Hotel also opened here in 2005.

Finance Street, Central

International Finance Centre (ifc)

The Center –

At 350 metres (about 1,148 feet) and 80

storeys high, The Center towers above its surroundings

and captures panoramic views of Victoria Harbour.

At night, the computerised neon lighting provides a

constantly changing spectacle.
