New Territories

Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark –

The geopark is

divided into the Northeast New Territories Sedimentary

Rock Region and the Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region,

with each region featuring four geo-areas, eight in total.

The Volcano Discovery Centre showcases hexagonal

rock columns, volcanic structures, volcanic eruptions

and related geographical knowledge. Visitors can find

Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark

Hong Kong Wetland Park –

Located near the

internationally recognised Mai Po Marshes bird

sanctuary, this 60-hectare (about 148-acre) park

demonstrates the diversity of Hong Kong’s wetland

ecosystem. Outside the Visitor Centre, there are

extensive wetland and other exhibits. Your guests

can get close to nature through integrated, themed

education and recreation facilities, including audio-

visual shows, wildlife models and wetland simulations.

Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden –

The Kadoorie

Agricultural Aid Association has sponsored a great deal of

research since the 1950s, in association with the University

of Hong Kong. Experiments in livestock breeding and

the development of high-yield produce, together with

infrastructure improvements, have helped thousands of

farmers to become self-supporting. Local travel agents can

arrange group visits with advance notice.

Kam Shan Country Park –

This park situated to the

north of Kowloon is famous for its “monkey hills”, which

are inhabited by bands of long-tailed macaques. It is

accessible from Sha Tin in the New Territories, and

Cheung Sha Wan, Mei Foo in Kowloon.

Lions Nature Education Centre –

This 16-hectare centre

showcases the very best of Sai Kung’s natural charms,

including Chinese herbal garden, vegetable plots, a

fernery, an orchard, ponds, and indoor exhibitions. The

centre was opened in 1991 as a joint venture to promote

environmental protection between the Agriculture,

Fisheries and Conservation Department and the Lions

Club of Hong Kong and Macau.

Mai Po Wetlands –

Hong Kong is a resting stop on the

migratory routes of many bird species, as well as the

permanent home of many others. More than 380 bird

species have been recorded at Mai Po. The World Wide

Fund for Nature manages this marshland area.

Outlying Islands

Lantau Trail –

This 70-kilometre (43.5-mile) trail over

some of the most rugged landscape in Hong Kong

crosses two of the island’s highest summits, winds

through forests and offers stunning sea views. Lantau

Trail is divided into 12 stages, connecting many famous

spots with walks ranging from easy to difficult.
