Travel Tips
Ferries
Star Ferry –
Begun in 1898, the historic Star Ferry still
shuttles across Victoria Harbour every 6-12 minutes
between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui from 6:30am to
11:30pm. There is also another route connecting Wan
Chai with Tsim Sha Tsui. Fares range from HK$2.00 to
HK$3.40. Visitors can splurge on a HK$25 4-Day Tourist
Ticket for unlimited rides on the Star Ferry. Please
consult the Star Ferry website at
www.starferry.com.hkfor details.
Outlying Island Ferries –
A large fleet of double and
triple-decked ferries plies an extensive range of routes
to the outlying islands and New Territories towns.
One-way fares to the four major islands (Cheung
Chau, Lamma, Lantau and Peng Chau) cost between
HK$13.20 Monday through Saturday to HK$42.90 on
Sundays and public holidays. There is often a choice
of fast or ordinary ferries, and journeys to most islands
take less than an hour.
Kaido –
These local ferry services provide delightful
travel experiences and offer services to some
fascinating out-of-the-way attractions such as Po Toi
Island. Licensed kaido services are scheduled, but not
air-conditioned.
Trams
Hong Kong Tramways –
Established in 1904, the tram
system runs from Kennedy Town to Shau Kei Wan,
with a side loop around the Happy Valley racecourse,
providing a fascinating view of the urban bustle daily
from about 5am to midnight. The fare is fixed at
HK$2.30 regardless of distance, paid into the driver’s
coin box upon alighting. Exact change is required.
Octopus card is also accepted.
Peak Tram –
With modern, automated trams climbing
373 metres from Central to The Peak every 10 to 15
minutes between 7am and midnight, the Peak Tram
is a major attraction with spectacular views. Fares
are HK$28 one-way and HK$40 return. Bus 15C runs
from Star Ferry Pier in Central to the Lower Peak Tram
Terminus on Garden Road daily from 10am to 11:40pm.
